Editorial Reviews: Chronos II maintains the stylish design and aluminium facia that made the original so popular, but is now available in two colours, has an improved display, automatic light sensor and includes FM with RDS. If you havent experienced DAB digital radio yet, youre in for a treat. Select stations by name, see news and track titles on the scrolling text display, tune at the touch of a button, and listen in crisp, clear, digital-quality sound. And theres more listening choice on DAB too in many areas up to twice as many stations as FM. Of course, Chronos II still has plenty of bedside features, such as a large clock display, four independent alarms (each of which can be set for weekdays only, weekends only or as a one-off), a snooze timer and a sleep timer. Other features include PUREs Intellitext®, for browsing stored scrolling text, textSCANTM to pause and control scrolling text and a USB port to add new features as they become available. All EcoPlus products are designed and manufactured to minimise their environmental impact, with: Reduced power consumption Use of materials from recycled and sustainable sources Optimum packaging size for transport efficiency Selection of components with minimised environmental impact

Summary: looks good but reception poor and software clunky
Comment: Sadly I'm going to send this product back for three reasons.

1) Reception very poor - despite being in what the BBC website says is a good DAB reception area (walton-on-thames). It is also highly variable - sometimes it's fine when i'm stood in the room - but suddenly gets weak when I lie on the bed.

2) Display far too bright - even on the dim setting - I have to place a book in front of it at night - shouldn't really have to do this with a £50+ product.

3) - and this is the clincher - there's no way to easily cancel the alarm if you wake up before it goes off. I often have 5am starts for work - if I wake up before the alarm it's much better for my partner if I can quickly cancel it before it wakes her up as well - instead I have to go through a clunky menu system to do this - not easy at 4:55am.

It's a shame because it looks nice on my bedside table - and I really want DAB so I can listen to the cricket on 5 live sports extra. But for a second generation machine basic faults like points 2 and 3 are really unacceptable.

Summary: notthebestservice
Comment: I am in complete agreement with P Beard "dab fan" that for a supposedly up-market radio, the aerial leaves a lot to be desired. I have contacted PURE customer service by email asking if there is anything I could use/attach to enhance signal reception and perhaps obtain some of the stations that are in the "fairly likely to receive" category. The reply I received was not very helpful giving no recommendations but giving a warning that tampering with the existing aerial on the Chronos II would invalidate the warranty. If they had ventured to give me some helpful tips rather than their negative attitude to my query I might be happier.

Summary: unsceduled alarms
Comment: I like the look and feel of this radio....but,
The first one I bought kept switching on at 4AM even though the alarms were either switched off or scheduled for later in the day.

I replaced the radio within a week and the second radio is doing the same - this time at 2AM!

I am returning the radio and choosing an alternative brand.

Summary: Looks good, but pretty crap
Comment: It probably is better than the original, but mine broke after a week.

You cant set the radio to come on and then an alarm, without setting two separate alarms and its fiddly.

also crap aerial, its just a piece of wire, cant believe they cant supply a proper metal one, especially as DAB is hard to receive in some areas.

Summary: Nice piece of kit, but the screen is far too bright,
Comment: Over all this is a quality device, the build quality is good, there has clearly be a lot of thought put into the design, the buttons are logically laid out and easy to use. The sound quality is impressive, its so crisp and clear it hardly requires any volume to hear it. The set of alarm options are comprehensive, I can see why some people might see it as fiddly to set an alarm but the flexibility of options weekday\weekend\sat\sun\once means you hardly ever have to change things once they are set up.

The clock also has a USB port so that you can update its software to fix bugs, and upgrade it to DAB+ when it come out (there will be a cost for this).

Its not perfect though, its a little on the chunky side compared to older clock radios.....nothing stupid, but it could do with being 10%-15% smaller. The screen size is a little small especially considering the amount of real estate on the front of the device. The viewing angle of the screen is quite restrictive, my bedside cabinet is about a foot higher than my bed, and I can't see the time without lifting my head. The screen is still abit too bright at night even when the brightness is turned right down. There are also a few glitches with the display where it doesn't refresh the content and the time gets imposed over the top of something it shouldn't.

EDIT: After initially being impressed I eventually returned this as the screen brightness even at lowest levers was unacceptable.
