Navigation not bad, fiddly to use.
Comment:
The software and maps in it are a huge improvement over the Garmin I bought earlier in the year, which gave me shortest distance when I asked for quickest route - not the same at all! No such problems with the Tomtom but I have 2 problems with it. Mounting it is incredibly fiddly compared with the system which Garmin uses. It is not possible to mount it while driving, unlike the Garmin which only needs one hand. Also in bright light there is too much reflection from the screen plus the display is nowhere near as bright as the Garmin's, making it difficult to use in sunny conditions (I have a convertible - even worse). But, unlike the Garmin, the updates seem to work fine (couldn't get Garmin's website to connect with my unit at all).
Not perfect - but none of them seem to be.

Not good!
Comment:
I bought (and returned) two of these within the last 6 weeks. Problem? Whenever I connected it to TomTom Home via my PC (to instal the safety camera add-on) the whole thing crashed and then froze.
Such a shame - because when it worked, it was excellent.

Absolutely brilliant!
Comment:
This is without doubt the best satnav on the market at the moment. The maps are clear, the screen info can be customised, the choice of voices is good (male/female) and programming an address is easy - especially as you can simply enter a postcode. Other useful information is "places of interest" where it will give you details of places near your destination or on the route such as restaurants, tourist attractions, etc. with telephone numbers and more.
I had a Garmin before and this knocks the spots of it. The people who run it down have obviously never had satnav before and if it is your first one it does take some getting used to the instructions. For example when it says "turn right in 400 yards" you have to watch the countdown to 400 yards if you are no good at judging distances because there could be another right turning in 200 yards which you may well take by mistake. All the wrong turnings are user errors not the satnav which is absolutely brilliant and has taken me all over Europe on many many occasions with absolutely no problems whatsoever. And an added bonus is the warning sound when there is a speed camera or when you are going over the speed limit in a given area - and this works all over Europe too!

TomTom One XL with Western Europe Map, NOT UK & ROI
Comment:
I bought this product in Spain, driving back to Ireland through France.
The quality of the map in Spain and France is very good. I had several customer meetings both in Madrid and Paris suburbs and the device got me there every time in the time scale predicted. The traffic camera alerts were useful and accurate.
Once I got back to Ireland, I found the device to be pretty good, but not as accurate detail as in Continental Europe. There are no traffic camera alerts as far as I can tell. I was looking to plan a trip to Northern Ireland and there are some details lacking on the map, since I could not find the place names.
This is, I think, the difference between getting the UK & ROI map and the Western Europe Map. If you're looking for such detail in both regions, you should invest in both maps to install on your device.
I liked the Tom Tom Home software which gives you the ability to update the map details and also to personalise the device, e.g. put a security code on it. I have already replaced the arrow icon with an image of my car. I also found an excellent freeware software "Tyre", that allows you to plan trips using Google Maps and then download them into the device.

Tom Tom has no sense of direction
Comment:
I wanted TomTom believing it was the market leader. I was bought the XL 22 Europe as a gift earlier this month. We used it the first day to find it had a dislike of any A roads, motorways or anything wider than a 1-track lane with passing places. If we then put ourselves back on the main road, it told us to turn off again. We even went up someone's drive (no other roads nearby) - granted it wasn't apparent it was a drive, at first. When it took us 3 sides of a square to bring us back on the same road we'd left we knew it had a worse sense of direction than I. Back to the shop. Day 2: they said there wasn't anything wrong but changed the settings for us (to use the same we'd been using anyway) and we embarked on another adventure. A 45 minute drive took 2.5 hours and this was supposed to be the fastest route. It may have been had there not been cows, cars and flooding to contend with on the chosen roads. We turned it off and came home using a more reliable map. Back to the shop. They ordered a replacement which came yesterday. I turned it on today to have a loud whistling noise and no GPS signal. I live in an open area, no tall buildings and it took 10 minutes to find a satelite, yet the first one didn't have either of these problems. Today we have a refund and will but something that is not Tom Tom. Unless you like great adventures and travelling literally as the crow flies, fields and all, I wouldn't recommend.
