Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: There's no real competition! Comment: The TomTom ONE is, for the occasional or semi-frequent user of satnav the only way to go. Plug it in, and off you go. Intuitive to use - does exactly what it says on the tin. It has bigger brothers with more bells and whistles, but unless you are 'on the road' as part of your job you probably wont need those. This does the job - nicely. Customer Rating: Summary: A good idea to buy the leading brand? Comment: I wanted a basic SatNav without all the useless bells and whistles and this one, which comes highly rated, seemed to be the obvious choice. I had considered the Binatone unit but decided to spend the extra and get the 'top name'. First mistake. The unit arrived promptly (as always with Amazon) and made a great impression with build quality etc. That's where the wheels started to fall off though. I followed the instructions to the letter regarding setting up the internet link and updating the maps etc. So far so good, but when I fired up the unit it simply displayed a 'No map available' message. After much fruitless remedial work on instruction from the website support - which included accessing the map folder on the device and checking it and deleting it ready for a fresh install/update - I finally connected up again and attempted an update. The web-update then informed me that the device was 'up to date', despite the map folder actually being missing! In desperation I then followed the manual's suggestion and reset the unit, which appears to have disabled the thing completely! It's now quite dead. Excellent. I'll save the money next time and buy the cheapest. It seems more money doesn't necessarily mean better. Hopefully this is an individual rogue unit but I won't be trying another one. Customer Rating: Summary: Take a BACKUP before you do anything! Comment: I suppose this does what it's supposed to. I do get annoyed when it says 'right turn ahead', because what I actually hear, is 'turn right'. OK, so that's my problem :/ However, the bigger problem is when I tried to install updates. OMG! Nightmare. The whole system crashed, and it's a real good job I had done a backup first or it would have been a case of having to return it. Even then, trying to get support to get the thing to work again was a task in itself. Also had a problem with suddenly not being able to search by postcode, and had to download a zip file to fix it. This is not my best friend. Customer Rating: Summary: Compact, Easy to use, Value for Money, Excellent Product Comment: TomTom ONE V3 Satellite Navigation - Western Europe I bought one for myself last year, just before Christmas. I don't own a car, but hire a car as and when the need arises. Found that car hire companies make an extra fortune if you want to hire a satellite navigation device, ranging from £10.00 or more per day and it soon all ads up. Found that I could save myself a lot in the long run by investing in a sat nav. I also prefer being able to personalise the device for easy navigation, which I found a bit restricting when hiring a device when hiring a car. I'm so impressed with the TomTom One v3, that I bought the same one as an early Christmas present for my brother, who just moved to the UK. The TomTom ONE v3 is good value for money, quality, compact and a good investment in the long run. I charge it through my computer when I update the programs on the device etc. and I also use the charger in the car when travelling long distances. I haven't found a problem with the battery (if fully charged) short distance, however if your journey is more than 2 hours, charging whilst driving is necessary, which I don't particularly find problematic or an inconvenience. Charing when using for longer periods is essential with any electronic device and I don't see why it should be any different for a Satellite Navigation device. Suggestion: Can the company selling these devices include the carry case as part of the package in future... Customer Rating: Summary: A disappointing experience Comment: Had used TomTom GPS before on a PDA and had even borrowed a V1 TomTom One for a trial run, so I was familiar with many of its shortcomings before purchase. Poor battery life, road info not up to date, slow GPS signal capture etc.were all things I knew about but wasn't unduly bothered about - it's the base model after all. 2 weeks after purchase the screen developed a fault, rendering it unreadable. Other than that the product did seem prone to making unusable route decisions via one way streets or restricted access roads which meant having to drive around in circles whilst TomTom worked out a different route. So it has been sent back to Amazon who have refunded us our money; much obliged Amazon. I won't be buying another Tom Tom One and will probably go back to using an A-Z and Streetmap to plan a route BEFORE I set off in the car. If you can live with its faults it is easy to use. If you need to rely on a GPS system for your work this one isn't for you. Borrow a few different models and test try them, especially in city centres with one way systems or bus/taxi only routes.
