Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: good unit but disappointing map coverage Comment: Bought this unit in June this year and though I am very happy with the actual satnav, I was very disappointed with the maps. I live in Cornwall and maybe they just haven't bothered to come down here. To have B roads inaccurate is disappointing but there are a number of major A road errors on the map - roads that have been open for over twelve months. Having had the unit for just a few months they now tell me that my maps are out of date and they want £196 for me to update them! I wonder if the new ones have corrected the errors? I am tempted to change the unit but don't use it regularly enough to make it worthwhile. It's a shame because the interface and the system is very good... Customer Rating: Summary: Complete solution Comment: One very important thing is that when you buy GO 720 and do all the online upgrades to latest software and latest maps (via Map Guarantee) you have pretty much most of the functions of the GO 740 which is about twice as expensive. What you will not have is HD traffic but you can still have regular traffic service which is a lot cheaper. I actually do not like HD traffic because how it works. TomTom tracks every user in real time and uses that information to detect traffic congestions. I am not very keen to be tracked that way even if TT says that it's anonymous. Basically this unit has the same internals as GO 740 plus FM transmitter but lacks space for SIM card. Nevertheless GO 720 can connect to TomTom services via external mobile phone and bluetooth. As for navigation this unit works very well. Thanks to latest IQ Routes 24/7 (same as in 740) it estimates arrival times very accurately and also chooses best road depending of day and time of day. Maps are are detailed, map share works and is very convenient, lane guidance is handy. Overall very good unit and I definitely recommend it. Customer Rating: Summary: 720 is a failure Comment: I bought a TomTom 720 in March 2008 and totally regret doing so. Soon after purchase the device would occasionally turn itself off for no reason.These episodes got more regular until it eventually only stayed on for a few seconds. I sent the unit back for repair, being told that it usually takes 5-7 working days to turn around. After some very expensive 'hold the line' phone calls to the elusive customer support and a 1 month wait (waiting for parts they said), I received the repaired unit back. They obviously are not competent in the repairs field, as the unit still does not work. To make matters worse, as well as returning my device, they also sent me a repaired device belonging to another customer, which I now have to return. Incompetence again. My advice to would be purchasers is to type 'tomtom 720 switches off' into Google and read what others have to say in the forums. It is a common fault. Steer well clear. There are other brands on the market as good if not better. Customer Rating: Summary: Good little unit. Comment: I bought this unit to replace version 6 running on a PDA. I have now had it for 2 months and have found it very reliable. I have updated it to Version 8 software and maps and the upgrade using TOM TOM home version 2 went very smoothly. Remember to click Disconnect Device before removing it from the cradle. I think that where people go wrong. I bought this for £174 which was the cheapest at the time, but I notice the price has gone up to £196, so shop round or look at the 730 which has come down, now the 740 has come out.
