Comment:
Purchased this player due to it's first class review in What Hi-fi magazine.
To put it simply the picture quality from this player is amazing when watching blu-ray in full 1080p. I had previously used the PS3 for viewing blu-ray and this player far exceeds the PS3 for viewing this format. The vibrancy of colour and level of detail are nothing short of jaw dropping, as opposed to just being realy good on a PS3.
Cant comment on the onboard HD sound decoding abilities of this player as I'm only hooked up to a stereo amp.
Upscaling seems excellent, DVD's appear sharper and more detailed, not as good as blu-ray obviously but better than they look on a SD DVD player.
The Panny easily has the best picture quality for the money and that's what blu ray is about!
Buy one, especially at this price, you wont be disappointed.

Great Blu Ray player
Comment:
I waited a long time for the HD wars to settle and for Blu Ray to fully establish itself before committing to buy a player. It was the rave reviews of The Dark Knight that made me realise my Pioneer 43" Plasma deserved a proper high definition input.
I ordered this on the basis of the What Hi Fi awards and so far have been delighted with the player. It has a reasonable start up time, has very clear and intuitive menus with a good remote control and works fine with my Logitech Harmony 885. Picture and sound are superb.
There have been mixed reports about its ability to upscale DVDs - I have been delighted with the results and have found standard DVDs look better than they did with my old Pioneer upscaling DVD player.
In short, an easy recommendation to anyone, with a great price from Amazon.

Blu-Ray is Brilliant!
Comment:
I was incredibly skeptical about Blu-Ray and its benefits but finally decided to take the plunge and buy one. I chose the Panasonic because the price was very reasonable, it was Profile 2 blu-ray rather than 1.1 and had BD live amongst other great features.
I haven't been at all disappointed. Setup was incredibly simple and the HDMI connection made things quick and easy (it helps to check your TV has one before buying the cable - I didn't but struck it lucky) and the size of the player is manageable, though not as slim as I've become used to with normal DVD players.
The picture quality is immense. To put it to the test I played parts of my Blu-Ray and normal 'The Dark Knight' DVDs one after the other and not only was the detail much better but the picture was incredibly vivid and lively. The picture was also made fullscreen as a result of the original settings, making a huge difference compared with normal DVD which still had the black bars and a relatively fuzzy picture.
The upscaling of the Blu-Ray player is also very impressive and I have high hopes for the BD live features. All-in-all, this is an excellent product that I would recommend to anyone looking to upgrade their movie-watching experience!

Great player for the money
Comment:
Like others I bought this after reading the 'What Hi-fi' review of it, so my expectations were high. Build quality seems ok although not rock-solid, the front bit that covers the DVD tray could be more refined but thats a minor point I suppose.
Picture quality is great for blu-rays and standard DVD's too - it upscales them satisfactorally. What I would like though is the ability to disable up-scaling for standard DVD's while retaining 1080p output for blu-ray discs. This would alow me to use the (superior) upscaling ability of my Sony amplifier, but in order to do this I have to dig around in the settings menu to change the output every time, then change it back again for blu-rays so I just live with the built-in upscaler.
Sound is great too, and the ability to decode both Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-MA onboard is useful. Oddly though, the initial settings on my player wouldn't allow it to output TrueHD at all: In the settings you can choose whether to output the audio in 'bitstream' (for external decoding) or 'pcm' (for internal decoding). It also warns you the 'bitstream' option doesn't work if you enable 'secondary audio' (the clicking sounds on menus etc.). So I was surprised to find that TrueHD was set to 'bitstream' and that 'secondary audio' was enabled...although DTS was set to 'pcm' and so worked fine. Easily solved, but a bit silly.
Connections are sparse but acceptable. Video out options are: HDMI, Component Video and Composite Video. Audio options are: HDMI, Analog (stereo only) and Digital Optical. I would have liked a coaxial digital output but this is a basic model after all.
Overall it's a good player, although I'd like to be able to tweak around with it a bit more. Basic, but a good first purchase for blu ray.
