Summary: Good enough if common sense used
Comment: I've never been bothered about satnav, but a relative bought me this, partly as a joke I think (£1 on Price-Drop TV).
I had to drive from Manchester to Lincoln recently and decided to give it a whirl. I was pleasantly surprised, though I thought the routes chosen would not have been my first choice. However, they were just as quick as my normal route. I thought it odd that it selected a completely different route home to the outward journey, but again, it was just as quick as my normal route. Maps are out of date though, as others have said. It often refers to roundabouts which are no longer roundabouts, but it's no big deal. I can't understand people slavishly following everything that any satnav suggests, you still should check road signs and use your brain occasionally. Stories of people turning left along a railway line are quite hard to understand. If you do go wrong, or choose not to follow its directions the wrong way up a one way street, it will soon recalculate an alternative corrected route, so it's not the end of the world. Speed camera locations impressed me, McDonalds locations didn't. Generally a useful piece of kit - I don't know whether more expensive ones are infallible (I suspect not) but the ability to upgrade maps without breaking the bank would have been useful.

Summary: Not overly impressed with Navman S30
Comment: I have owned this product for a few months and have used it a number of times during this period to travel to places throughout the UK, sometimes with success and at others not.
A sat-nav is particularly useful to someone like me who does not have a broad knowledge of the roads in Great Britain.

This particular model has some very useful features including:

Clear map illustraions, clear audio, user friendly inter-face etc.

My greatest complaint is that often times the Navman S30 does not recognise some postcodes. This is crucial. On a few occasions recently I have entered the postcode of the required destination only to be delayed because of this and have (frustratingly) had to find paper map directions instead.

In particular, tomorrow I was due to travel to London from my hometown in Wales for an important engagement. However the sat nav states it cannot calculate a route even though it recognises the postcode. I have failed to successfully resolve the problem on-line though according to the website my sat-nav has maps of london installed, and I could not locate a telephone helpline number to resolve this.

Also, whilst driving in a near-by city recently the navman s30 advised me to take a right-hand turn where to do so would have been an illegal (and dangerous) manoevre.

In conclusion, whilst the nav-man s30 has some very useful features it is unreliable and at times, in my experience(probably because the maps are out of date!)giving dangerous driving directions.

I will be looking to purchase another (hopefully more useful) sat-nav in the very near future. My advice to anyone would be to shop around and avoid buying this one in first place as I would have done had I known what I know now when I purchased this one.

    Summary: Excellent Basic satnav
Comment: Ive seen the bad reviews on this device, but here is my stab at it. I used the S30 to go to Ireland, both Southern & North of the border. The device worked very well, it did get its knicks in a twist when roads had been altered but nothing you couldnt see your way out of. I had to go from Rosslare to Dundalk and beyond into NI, quickly with few problems even if you ignored its advice and drove the wrong way. Guided me to the HS ferry south of Dublin no probs, showed me how to drive through the centre of Dublin avoiding the toll roads, great.

If I was quick enough to see a toll coming I turned off and let the S30 re calculate another route without touching it. Recalculating routes was quick and a damn quicker than getting a map out.

Back along the A55 express way in North Wales in the Brunstrum loonies area. I drove into the 30mph stretch, and immediately the S30 started notifying me at about the fixed scameras, the truck driver behind didnt have and he drove through at about 50, a little while further the git had another pop at me with 40 mpg zone, the S30 warned me as I started to put my foot down.

I always used the device powered from the 12V cigar lighter, on a long trip why use its internal battery? It has a day and night mode that switched as the sun came up and went down.

The menu structure was easy to use, I never read the manual. If you drive a lot, have to not miss ferries, want to keep your licence, and dont know you way round this thing is great.

Comment: I love this satnav its so easy to use, even my dad was quite impressed with it, and he has to use ones that are suitable for his lorry driving job! would certainly reccommend. Also if you register the satnav at navman.com and then register for the free map updates next year! but you have to register before a certain date think it could be 30th december? don't quote me on that. But the free map updates are an added bonus!

Comment: Navman S30 3D Satellite Navigation Unit With UK & Ireland Mapping
The only way I could think of to measure the accuracy of the Navman S30 unit was to set it up with a trip I was familiar with, but rather than going out in the car I put it into demo mode.
I setup home, and then setup a favorite destination - both very simple.
It found the postcode, but not the house of my destination - so I put in 16 rather than 15 - no big deal.
The unit was in default (i.e quickest, motorways, etc), and it had no problem getting to the destination town. Unfortunately, it then took the "tourist route", but eventually arrived at the destination. If I had not know the route I probably wouldn't have noticed.
I then re-ran avoiding motorways, and it came off the dual carriageway at the correct roundabout, but unfortunately missed a sharp right just after the roundabout, and instructed me to drive in the completely wrong direction for 3 miles.
The reason for getting sat nav was because we are visiting some unfamiliar areas in the near future, but after this demo, I am not confident that the Navman S30 will get me where I want to go.
