    Summary: Common Error
Comment: On Christmas Day, one year and a week after I first used this camera, I have experienced what I now find is a common error with a number of different models of Canon cameras. The lens gets stuck and wont retract. Canon wont do anything about it other than offer to repair at a cost to the customer.

    Summary: Good, but not great
Comment: It does everything it says it should and the quality of images is generally very good. The flash is also good for a compact. However...

    1. At high ISO settings (800, 1600) there is a lot of digital noise on images. I didn't get this as much with my old Fuji which was only 3Mp and a generation older. This has been picked up by the photography mags and websites.

    2. I wanted a camera with an old fashioned view finder (like my Fuji). This means you don't have to keep turning the camera on for a quick 'sighting shot' and it saves the battery. Well the viewfinder on the Canon is pants. Just as well the screen is very good and so is battery life. I get 70+ highest resolution photos on one charge. Get a spare battery as a back up though.

    3. It's minor pain to have to take the battery out to charge it. My old Fuji could be charged with it in situ.

If this review sounds rather negative - it isn't intended to be. It's a nice little bit of kit that you can easily hide (lose!) in your pocket or hand bag and provided you don't want to do much low light photography, you will be very happy with it.

    Summary: DON'T BUY CANON IXUS 70 !
Comment: There are reports all over the net that the lens will have a fault within a year of purchase and Canon will not be interested in your problem. It has happened to me after just 9 months! The lens won't open and displays a,"Lens error, restart camera",message. It won't restart. Canon don't care!
This is a generic problem with Canon cameras.
    BUYER BEWARE!

Summary: Fantastic Camera up until the point it stops working
Comment: Bought this for my wife as a Christmas present last year. It has been great and taken fantastic photos up until this week when suddenly the lens became jammed and the camera would just display "Lens Error, please restart camera".

A quick search shows this is a common problem, though nobody seems to have luck with the warranty/Canon. Cost of repair is apparently 100ish+VAT, so just bought a new Sony camera instead (<100).

I did not expect to have to replace the camera after 11 months of careful use. I will not be buying Canon again.

    Summary: Top drawer
Comment: Had this a while now, frisbee the memory card, bought the camera in a pack with a 2GB SD card and the (loveley) lowepro leather case. Am now limited to only 638 hi-res images - what a chore !

Images in slideshow work ok on my 28" analog panasonic TV, but crystal clear on the smaller 21" digital lcd Sony in the kitchen (I think its a digital thing). Video has to be darn close to my old analog (think its a canon) video camera. Images transferred to the PC can only be described as excellent, and when transferred to the 10" Kodak photoframe elicit oooh's from guests.

Excellent quality (really), zoom nominal (what do you expect in a camera this size?) but ok. But it has one really important feature . . .

IT CAN FIT IN MY SHIRT TOP POCKET ! So its always with me, I always get the shot . . . (the lowepro case fits unobtrusively on the belt if you prefer)

Makes my old Olympus OM2N (film) with zuico wide angle and 85-250mm zoom lense (all in a big shoulder bag) look sick . . technology has come of age.

One odd thing. I saw the Canon 75 and thought higher number, must be better than the 70. Nope. The 70 has an optical viewfinder, the 75 doesnt. My wife is long sighted (is that right?), she can see through the optical viewfinder but cant see the enormous screen. Whereas I'm . . . . .

. . . you get the picture (to coin a phrase).
