Summary: squeezebox wireless network music player
Comment: After an initial hiccup when the set lost power at start-up, the replacement was quickly despatched, however between public holidays and snowstorms, we had to wait 9-10 days for it to arrive. Since then we have been delighted with both the performance of the unit and the vast amount of music that is available via the internet radio facility. It looks classy and is very compact with a good display - since a lot of the stations don't feature DJs, they input the artist & track details which is invaluable. We thought we had a better than average knowledge of artists and their music, but this is a whole new world !

This wasn't a cheap buy but it is worth every penny.

Summary: Persevere with set-up for a great reward
Comment: Tech coming into our house has to be set-up-able quickly because the powers that be do not permit endless tinkering to get something to work. I nearly exceeded my allotted time getting my Squeezebox to work as (like almost every other wireless network device I've ever owned) this took a seemingly endless period of tinkering to get it to talk to my o2 wireless router. Fiddling with encryption settings, firewalls and network names had no effect. Twice it appeared to have connected successfully only to then fail once more. The final solution was to manually set the wireless channel at something other than the default '6' on the router then, suddenly, everything was absolutely fine.
The reward for this initial frustration is enormous, though. I have the Squeezebox in our lounge, connected to a set of powered 2.1 speakers some 8 or 9 metres away from the router and on a different floor and the sound quality is superb, I can well-believe the reviews of others linking it to much higher-end kit who are pleasantly surprised by the quality. My only concern is how many of the features might rely on Logitech's servers - the 'mysqueezebox' stuff which could presumably just be switched off by Logitech with no notice. However so long as the basic wireless music streaming continues uninterrupted, I be a happy man.

Summary: You have to get this...
Comment: My music collection was slowly being relegated from the lounge by kid's clutter and the like and I decided to do something about it. My main aim was to remove the lot, load it onto my PC and then make it available from where ever I had it to where ever I needed it. The problem was, how do I do this without having to retrofit cables everywhere? Solution - wireless music player. I saw this, could not believe the price (was a bit doubtful as to whether it would do the job) but decided to go for it. Bingo - just the job. Exactly what I was looking for. I'm delighted, the wife is delighted and the kids can't leave it alone. All of my music is now available at the touch of a few buttons. Easy to set up, easy to use, I honestly can't fault it. I'm not a PC geek nor am I an audiophile so, maybe, I'm easy to please, but this works for me so I'm happy. Quality is good, sound is as good as your amp and speakers, what you stream is what you get! I apologise to my neighbours now! I highly recommend this product.

    Summary: Dissapointed
Comment: I will admit up front I am an audiophile. I have a very high end separates system and like to listen to my music without distractions. I now also have a very large CD collection. The idea of simply scrolling through my collection was the main appeal as well as saving storage space. I did extensive research before I bought the squeezebox because there are several very good alternatives out there and this is not a cheap item. In addition there was nowhere that I could go to see a demonstration as one of my big worries was the sound quality. I've had the squeeze box for little over a week now and when it works it's very impressive. I needn't have worried about the sound quality. It is almost impossible to tell the difference from a CD playing and the same music streaming through the squeeze box. There is however a considerable loss in signal strength. I have to turn the amp volume control up an extra 50% to get the same volume through the speakers. That said there is no distortion, I just have to remember when I move over to the CD player. Scrolling through my music collection could not be easier and I like the fact that you can see the album covers and track info. So far so good.
I also picked this item because all the reviews I read said it was easy to set up. Unfortunately that's not been my experience. Firstly I'm no slouch in the computer department. I have managed to set up broad band, download music, rip my CD's using EAC and compressing in FLAC to an external drive, all without a hitch. The brief startup manual said it would take 30 minutes to set up. Well connecting to the BT home hub was easy however finding my music on the computer was a different matter. Once connected to Broadband I had internet radio. I downloaded the PDF user manual, which was not that easy to find, and I found it unhelpful. It also lurched from one item to another without logic. I could have done better. The FAQ to which the web site and manual constantly refer was down so no help. The European helpline was manned by a German speaker with poor command of English and an even poorer understanding of the startup procedure. He couldn't even tell me how much the call was costing. I eventually gave up and sorted the problem by trial and error. Since then the controller has regularly decided to de program itself loosing its connection to broadband and my computer. The only solution appears to be to reset to factory settings and start all over. Again all done by trial and error. So far I've spent more time sorting it out than listening to music. I'm sure as I get used to the settings and controller I will over come these snags and it will be a great system. My advice. If you are part of the computer generation and happy with messing around with network settings, firewalls etc then this is probably for you. If you struggle to program your video then this isn't for you. I wish now I had gone for a hifi unit like the Brennan.
    Update 01/10/09
Logitech have launched version 7.4 of their squeezebox software. It sounds great -if only the web site worked and I could download it!!
