Poor instruction manual. Overengineered.
Comment:
My parents recently bought this device to go with their Bravia LCD TV (which, by the way, is excellent).
We simply could not set it up properly. I'm an engineer by training, and even I couldn't figure it out! This blasted piece of kit foxed my father, brother-in-law, neighbours and friends. Eventually, they had to call out a TV engineer to set it up for them.
Whilst the manual doesn't help matters (it's incomprehensible, even to me) the user interface is unintuitive, making operation of this unit akin to wading through treacle.
I guess I'm spoilt, as I have the excellent Humax 9300 PVR which is so easy to use. Sony really do need to look at this aspect of their product design as it simply isn't good enough to rely on superb quality pictures (for which they're famous); they are now well into the digital age and they now need to focus on making sure their products are easy to use.

Works well and keeps on going
Comment:
It's been 6 months since I bought my Sony RDR-HXD870 and I'm still just as impressed with it as the day it came out of the box.
The build quality of the box is of the usual, high Sony standard, and the same goes for the remote. It looks good under the TV, doesn't draw attention to itself either in its looks or noise level.
Initial setup takes a while, especially if you're looking to coordinate the box with a third party tuner or satellite receiver, but its worth getting it right on day one because you'll never have to fiddle with it again.
That said I've never quite got it to fully cooperate with my Sky digital box. I consider myself quite competent when it comes to fiddling with machinery like this, and the complexity of this part of the setup is the only reason the box doesn't get a five star rating.
The quality of DVD playback is excellent -- you can see a huge difference compared to supermarket or games console DVD players. The 4-speed fast forward/rewind is worth the money alone.
Recording is simple and the quality is high -- in the highest fidelity mode you can barely distinguish that it's not live. 160GB is more than enough for my needs. You watch something, you delete it. Simple.
Another Sony triumph.

Excellent HDD/DVD Recorder - But the '890' looks like being a worthy successor
Comment:
Just a quick review to say I have owned an 870 for nearly a year now and I think it is very good.
High points are:
1. When recording shows with adverts to HDD it usually places chapter marks reliably at the beginning and of advert breaks. This means that if you want to burn the recording to DVD it is very easy and quick to get rid of the adverts using the A-B editing function before you burn the DVD.
2. The tuners are good, particularly the digital one. Having recently acquired a Freeview aerial and a Samsung LCD TV to go with the Sony, I have to say the Sony tuner is superior to the Samsung, good though the latter is. The quality of picture when pumped through the Sony to the TV is excellent. Obviously the results you will get will be dependent on your individual circumstances, such a aerial, signal strength, HDMI connectors etc etc.
3. Upscaling to 1080P through an HDMI connection for DVDs is really good and as a previous reviewer implied gives new life to your DVD collection when you watch them again. (Comment: For the reviewer having difficulty with 1080P as their TV is 1080i, I found that in the HDMI settings within the system menu for the 870 you can set the output to different levels including 1080i and 1080p. Hope this helps.)
4. The Guideplus programme guide system which you can use with either the analogue TV tuner or the digital is clearer and easier to use in my opinion than the digital Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) that is also supplied and makes it easy to find programmes to record. You can record series if you use the digital EPG, but I note that the new 890, which is the successor to the 870 highlights it as a feature so maybe it is easier to use on the 890.
All in all, I would thoroughly recommend this recorder though perhaps it may be better going for the replacement 890.

Recording from SKY HD BOX planner to DVD harddrive
Comment:
Has anyone out there managed to record from the Planner on SKYHD BOX with this player/recorder Sony RDR-HXD870.
As I've tried everything to record from there, I can only record directly from HDBOX.
I know it's probably the connections but can someone tell me which connection goes where, I have HDMI connections and scart but still unsure why it's not recording from the planner from SKYHD.
Otherwise get piece of kit well worth the money.
