Summary: NO PROBLEMS-EVEN FOR AN OLD-UN
Comment: Although not a technophobe but being over a certain pensionable age, making changes and learning how to operate new gadgets doesn't always come easy. But forced into this position by a defunct button on my existing universal remote, I took the decision to check out what was available. My existing remote was a well known make and served me well for 3+ years but had a few drawbacks, couldn't operate certain functions on some of my equipment and had to replace batteries every week or so due to the sensitive motion detection system that lights it up even when you sneeze let alone when you pick it up (being retired and at home a lot now, it gets a lot of use), but I still had to keep some remotes handy to cover some functions. Having read all the reviews I could find, I decided to try the Harmony 555.
Ordered Logitech Harmony 555 from Amazon on 27/12/08, received it within 5 days(free delivery)thanks Amazon.
Downloaded PDF manual and read supplied quick start guide and gathered all the equipment model numbers etc, followed instructions on supplied disc and connected to Internet, loaded info ie; LG 42" LCD TV, LG DVD/Receiver/Surround Sound system, Sony satellite receiver, Panasonic DVD Recorder, Hitachi DVD Recorder with 160Gig Hard Drive, Philips Digital set top box, Sony HI-Fi system with Dolby 5.1.
SURPRISE everything works first time, OK a few tweaks were needed here and there, mainly on sound preference systems etc, learned from original remote, no probs to date, there are still functions that I have not checked out yet like dubbing and others that I don't really use, but I bet they will work too.
All in all a fantastic piece of equipment, takes the place of 7 remotes, wish I had known about it earlier.
Oh, and it took me less than 3 hours from start to finish setting it up and I'm sure I'm not the quickest pensioner in town!

    Summary: Small but major flaw
Comment: There's a lot of reviews here so wont add to much but personally for what is otherwise a nice remote (not quite as ergonomic as say the Sky+ remote) it does have one annoying flaw. The main scroll wheel has a very heavy click, so for example if you're browsing channels or music the room is filled with the 'click'..'click'..'click'..'click'..'click'..'click'.. noise as you struggle in the boredom to find something worth watching! Sounds petty but it does get annoying!

    Summary: Appalling software
Comment: The hardware is a nice build quality, but the software is just awful, awful, awful. The basic concept of activities (ie that Watching TV consists of switching on the set top box and the TV, and resultant remote control is a mix of commands for the two devices) is quite good, it is just the implementation of the programming software that is the problem. The whole program is an online application, so no chance if you don't have broadband in front of the TV. And it better be fast, or the app will just constantly time out. The design of the software consists of page after interminable page of often simple single questions, that are often quite cryptic, with little help on screen and no "bread crumbs" to give you an indication of what came before or what is coming next. The practice of usually only putting one input box per page makes the process very very very slow. Anyone with any experience of software design will be tearing their hair out.

Summary: Harmony 555 = The best multi remote to date . . .
Comment: I have had a number of multi remotes over the years and this is comfortably the best.

The Harmony 555 succeeds where others fail as it manages to combine formidable device control, with comfort and convenience in everyday use.

I have the full suite of Sky+, projector and TV, multi amp, blu-ray, CD, etc, etc. This device handles pretty much all that is asked of it with no need to resort to the originals.

Critically, it is 'normal' remote sized so it actually does get used all the time. I have had previous fancy touch screens that are so boxy and large, they just don't sit comfortably in the hand, so I discarded in favor of the original remotes!

All of the design basics are right with this remote. The keypad layout is great for SKY+ and, thanks to the programmable soft keys around the LCD display, the most used functions on any device can be catered for.
Staying with the keys, I find them 'just right' in terms of response. Some others, including the slightly more expensive Logitech offerings, I found too spongy and lacking in feedback to the press. Finally, there is the thoughtful inclusion of back-lighting on demand, so you can see what to press when in 'cinema mode'.

As others have advised, this remote does take a while to set up, but the interface is highly intuitive, and the tech support is helpful and friendly if needed.

I have found one limitation, my projector requires a button to be 'held down' to control the optical zoom. It is not possible to program this in as part of a routine - even Logitech tech support could not help me here. So I still reach for my old projector remote to reset 16:9 from 4:3, but I can live with 2 remotes!

Oh, also it cannot control PS3, but that was always clear as PS3 remote is not infra red - works fine for the 360 and associated HD-DVD though.

All in, a great device at an extremely affordable price - why pay more!?
